Chapter One, The beginning

All around Carisse was a maelstrom with flashes of magical energy and the glint of swords as they clashed. Arrows rain down from above, prompting Carisse to put up a sphere of protective energy over her. Arrows hit the globe that was the shield wall, shattering on contact with the magic. She had used a teleport scroll to get her to one of the mountain villages around the Perion highlands, but ended up in the middle of a battle. Carisse looked around, looking for a way out from the chaos of battle. She dashed between individual duels and reached the edge of the battlefield, only to be set upon by a page.
The page raised his two-handed sword, the blade flashing with white sparks of magic. Carisse raised her staff to block the blow. The force of the strike pushed her down to one knee, and pushed her backwards by several inches. The page lifted his blade, and Carisse noticed that the edge of his irises were strangely ragged. She stood there, as the page attacked her with a slash of his blade.
Just as the page started to swing the sword, an arrow sprouted from his chest, and he fell as two more arrows struck, killing the page. Carisse came of her state of inaction, looking around for her rescuer. Suddenly, an invisible hand grabbed her arm and pulled her to safety, between several rock outcrops. Her rescuer came into view moments later, a ranger, with a bloodred bow in hand.
‘It is not safe here, mage. Go to safety quickly’
‘But, who are you?’
‘Go, mage. We will sing your song one day, soon in the future.’
With that, the archer vanished into the tumult of battle.
Carisse reached into her magical pack and pulled out a scroll, she touched the inscriptions on the scroll, and vanished from the barren wastes of Perion, and from the battle she had witnessed. She landed on one of the giant branches in Ellinia, and started to climb up, toward the Magic Library of the magician’s elder, Grendel. She burst into the Library, breaking the peaceful silence of the arcane sanctum. Grendel looked up from the massive wooden table.
‘Yes, magician Carisse?’
‘Elder Grendel, I bring important news. One of the villages of the warrior tribes has been attacked.’
‘By whom?’
‘I don’t know, Elder. They were also warriors of some sort’
Carisse recounted the incident with the Elder, up to the point where she returned to Ellinia.
‘And I returned to Ellinia by scroll.’
Grendel stood up, heading for one of the rooms in the inner sanctum, allowed only by the strongest of magicians.
‘Come with me, Carisse, you need to know the truth.’
Carisse hesitated, unsure whether to follow Grendel into the inner rooms.
‘Come with me, don’t hesitate, young one.’
Carisse took a deep breath, and stepped across the magical field that marked the boundary between the two areas, following the Elder.
The two magicians entered a room. In the centre of the circular room stood a pedestal, with a bloodred crystal floating above it.
‘This is the Fire elemental crystal. It gives its keeper full control of elemental fire. Its last owner was Tigus, one of the Archons of magic’
Carisse looked at the small crystal with awe. Tigus was a master of the fire element, and could start a firestorm with a flick of his fingers.
‘Why did you show me this, Elder?’
Grendel stroked his beard, looking closely at Carisse.
‘Did you ever know your father, Carisse?’
‘No, Elder.’
‘Your father was Tigus the Archon of Fire, and the crystal will only change its owner through birthright, or when its master is killed in battle.’
‘So, the crystal...’
‘You are the keeper of the Fire crystal, Carisse the magician’
To her credit, Carisse was not stunned by the news.
‘So, I can use the crystal?’
‘Yes, but you have to house it in a medium of your choice.’
Carisse stepped up to the pedestal, and reached for the crystal. The crystal flared with power, as if recognising its owner and reaching for her.
‘You have to visualise the medium in your mind and take the crystal’
Carisse clasped the crystal in her gloved hands, and the crystal flared with energy, and with a burst of blinding light, joined onto the palms of her gloves. The two half orbs glowed inside with a furious fire.
Grendel now walked to Carisse.
‘Defend the crystal with your life, Carisse. It is devastating in the wrong hands. Now, I have a task for you’
‘What is it, Elder?’
‘Travel to Henesys, and search for the archer who saved you during the battle. He knows something the magicians and even the Elders don’t. Find him, and ask him about the battle.’
‘Yes Elder.’
Carisse strode out to exit the sanctum.
‘Carisse?’
She turned around.
‘Yes Elder?’
‘Good luck.'
‘Thank you.'
Carisse turned back around, and left the Magic Library.
‘I hope I don’t need it’
Carisse climbed down the massive trees of the Ellinia forest, towards the path that led to the Capital of the Bowmen, Henesys.
